Motorola has swiftly rectified an unintended issue that saw some of its smartphones redirect users to an affiliate tracking website before opening the Amazon app. This misstep, which sparked concerns over user privacy and app integrity, has now been resolved, although the company has not disclosed the origins of the error.
Adjustments Made Following User Reports
In a statement, Allison Yi, Motorola’s executive director of product management, affirmed that the company acted quickly after the anomaly was reported by tech watchdogs and a vigilant Reddit user. Users in the U.S. launching the Amazon Shopping app experienced an unusual behavior: their phones would momentarily open the browser before redirecting them to the app, specifically routing them through a site associated with a fashion influencer, Kira Abboud, raising eyebrows regarding the integrity of the redirect.
What Happened?
Yi explained, "This behavior was unintended and resulted in an inconsistent user experience," adding that, “Upon identifying the issue, we promptly corrected the routing configuration. Users can now expect all installed apps to launch directly as intended." The redirection led to the installation of tracking cookies that could assign unique affiliate codes to users’ shopping sessions, potentially enabling third parties to benefit financially from users' purchases, a practice typically not done without transparency.

Understanding the Root of the Problem
The incident appears to stem from a co-developed application experience with Device Native, a firm specializing in mobile ad serving. Yi attributed the redirect to a collaboration aimed at enhancing app search and suggestion features on Motorola devices. However, despite the prompt corrective actions, Motorola's silence on how this mishap occurred has left some in the industry questioning the robustness of their development processes.
