In a decisive shift for the UK's steel industry, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced that legislation to nationalise British Steel will be introduced this week, paving the way for public ownership of the beleaguered steelworks.
During a recent address, Starmer emphasized that the government would pursue "full ownership of British Steel" as it conducts a public interest test. This announcement follows the government’s intervention last April, when it took control of British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant from its previous owner, Jingye, in an effort to avert the closure of critical operations.
