Sui Network Faces Back-to-Back Disruptions as Technical Bugs Trigger Outages

Jessica Anderson - May 29, 2026 - 6

The Sui Network has fallen victim to another significant disruption, as a technical bug caused brief but troublesome outages for the second consecutive day, leaving users anxious about the protocol's reliability. Following a severe outage that shut the network down for nearly six hours on Thursday, a subsequent interruption occurred on Friday, halting block production for over three and a half hours before normal operations resumed.

According to updates from the Sui team, the interruptions were linked to a flaw in the network update software released in their recent 1.72 update, intended to enhance address balances and gas charging logic. They reported that the outages began when the last block was produced at approximately 11:51 UTC on Friday, with activity resuming around 3:30 UTC.

Ongoing Challenges for Sui Network

Both incidents highlight ongoing challenges faced by Sui Network's mainnet validators, raising concerns about the protocol's robustness amid increasing loads and operational demands. The team explained that an interim fix was previously implemented to temporarily restore network functionality; however, it carried a low probability of causing further disruptions. Thankfully, a long-term solution has now been rolled out and adopted by a majority of the validators.

A History of Stability Issues

This latest series of disruptions adds to a frustrating history for the Sui Network, which had already experienced a significant outage in January. That occurrence resulted from a consensus bug that prevented the network from achieving the necessary consensus threshold due to conflicting transaction submissions among validators. During that event, which also lasted over six hours, user funds remained secure and certified transactions were not rolled back, thanks to the network’s checkpoint certification and quarantine mechanisms.

As blockchain technology continues to evolve, high-throughput networks like Sui face inherent risks. These include various failure points across multiple layers, such as data availability and transaction execution. In the broader crypto landscape, such outages do not only impact decentralized networks but also resonate across centralized platforms, as demonstrated by a temporary service disruption at Coinbase earlier this month due to an Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage.

Looking Ahead

As the Sui Network works to restore user confidence and stabilize operations, the events of the past two days serve as a stark reminder of the complexities involved in maintaining the integrity of blockchain technology amid rapid growth and innovation. Continuous monitoring and proactive management of software issues will be crucial as the platform navigates these turbulent waters.

For Sui users and the broader crypto community, the focus will be on ensuring that these technical setbacks become opportunities for learning and improvement moving forward.
