Chalmers, who started her prolific career at the tender age of 13 presenting Children's Hour on radio, quickly made her way into television in the 1950s. She first gained popularity as a presenter on Children's Television Club, a forerunner to Blue Peter, before moving on to become an announcer at the BBC.

In 1974, she took the helm of Wish You Were Here...?, a role she held for nearly three decades, until 2003. Through this program, Chalmers transported millions of viewers around the world, showcasing exquisite holiday destinations that inspired a generation of travelers. An ITV spokesman remarked, "As the host of Wish You Were Here...? for four decades, Judith Chalmers became one of the most beloved faces of British broadcasting."

Her contributions to television extended beyond travel. Chalmers also hosted shows such as Come Dancing and Good Afternoon, and she was a familiar voice on BBC Radio 2. Notably, she helmed events like the prestigious Miss World pageant.

A respected figure in her field, Judith Chalmers was honored with an OBE in 1994 for her services to broadcasting. She was married to sports presenter Neil Durden-Smith and was the proud mother of two sons, one of whom, Mark Durden-Smith, would go on to revive Wish You Were Here…? Now & Then in 2008, revisiting the glamorous locales she had brought to life.

Chalmers’ health had been declining for some time, and her passing has left a void in the hearts of many who grew up watching her on screen. As the media reflects on her legacy, her indelible mark on British television and the joy she brought to viewers will not be forgotten.

As tributes pour in, it is clear that Judith Chalmers was more than a television presenter; she was a beacon of adventure and positivity, whose legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of broadcasters.
