Zcash's Security Assured: No Serious Vulnerabilities Detected by Anthropic's AI

In a significant boost to the confidence of cryptocurrency enthusiasts, Zooko Wilcox, co-founder of Zcash, announced that Anthropic's cutting-edge AI model, Mythos, has identified no further critical vulnerabilities within the Zcash protocol. This finding comes on the heels of a previous forgery bug that recently raised alarms within the community.

During a security audit commissioned by the Swiss-based non-profit Shielded Labs, Mythos' review revealed that the privacy-preserving cryptocurrency remains intact, dispelling fears of deeper systemic issues. Wilcox shared the update via a post on X over the weekend, confirming that there were “no more serious bugs” detected following a swift remediation of the earlier-found forgery vulnerability.

On June 3rd, Zcash developers had temporarily halted all Orchard transactions due to a critical vulnerability in the shielded pool. This functionality was promptly restored the same day through an emergency upgrade. The original flaw stemmed from a longstanding forgery bug, uncovered with the assistance of Anthropic's Claude Opus model by security researcher Taylor Hornby. Reassuringly, the Zcash Foundation clarified that there was no evidence of exploitation related to the vulnerability, nor was there any unauthorized creation of value, ensuring that user privacy remained untouched during the incident.

AI Models: A Double-Edged Sword for Crypto Security

While the utilization of AI models to pinpoint vulnerabilities marks a progressive step in cybersecurity, it also engenders fresh concerns across the cryptocurrency landscape. Anthropic's recent release of its Fable 5 model drew scrutiny after it reportedly uncovered over 10,000 high or critical-severity vulnerabilities in essential software, reigniting debates about the implications of such technology on public safety. The company has assured users that Fable 5 is “made safe for general use,” implementing safeguards that redirect sensitive topics, including cybersecurity, to the more secure Claude Opus 4.8 model.

Amid these developments, Anthropic also announced the suspension of access to both its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models in response to a new U.S. government export control directive citing national security concerns. This move underscores the tension between innovation and security within a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
