Anthropic Set to Make U.S. Stock Market Debut Amid Rising AI Valuations

In a significant move for the artificial intelligence sector, Anthropic, the company behind the rapidly popularizing chatbot Claude, has announced its intention to go public. The firm confirmed on Monday that it has filed confidential documentation with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), aiming for an initial public offering (IPO) later this year.

Upon its debut, shares of Anthropic will be available for trade on American stock exchanges, although details regarding share pricing and quantity have yet to be disclosed. The public offering comes amid a flurry of interest in AI companies, with investor appetite set to be tested against the backdrop of soaring valuations.

Founded just five years ago by Dario Amodei and several co-founders, Anthropic has quickly amassed a hefty valuation, recently pegged at over $965 billion. This positions it as a formidable competitor to OpenAI, which has seen its valuation reach approximately $852 billion. This meteoric rise has aroused substantial investor interest as both firms vie for dominance in the AI landscape.

Dario Amodei, having previously worked at OpenAI, established Anthropic following disagreements with CEO Sam Altman. This has led to an intense rivalry, with both companies developing similar AI technologies and vying for the attention of corporate clients and consumers. In a parallel context, OpenAI is also contemplating a public release this year, although Altman has indicated that their timeline is flexible, stating, "We’ll do it when it makes sense."

As Anthropic moves closer to its market debut, experts indicate that its IPO could serve as a benchmark for future generative AI valuations. Troy Hooper, leader of equity capital markets at Mergermarket, asserted, "Neither Anthropic nor OpenAI wants to be the last major AI pure-play to list," emphasizing the importance of first-mover advantage.

Harrison Rolfes, a research analyst with PitchBook, suggested that the scrutiny surrounding Anthropic's IPO could be unprecedented, with investors keenly analyzing its business margins, profitability, and sales dynamics. He noted, "The 2026 window either becomes the most consequential IPO cycle since the dot-com era or offers the most expensive lesson in narrative-versus-fundamentals that public markets have ever taught."

Amid these developments, Anthropic is also entrenched in a legal battle with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) concerning a controversial $200 million contract that raised concerns over potential applications of its AI technology for domestic surveillance and autonomous weaponry. This friction has led to public disagreements, including a forceful statement from President Donald Trump against the company's practices. Despite the ongoing litigation, Anthropic reported strong growth, anticipating profitability in the first half of this year.

As the drumbeat of market activity intensifies with the approaching launches of both Anthropic and SpaceX, the tech world appears poised for an epoch-defining moment in the evolution of public capital markets.
