The Israeli military has declared large portions of southern Lebanon as "combat zones" and issued urgent evacuation orders for residents, intensifying a rapidly escalating conflict with Hezbollah. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have instructed civilians to relocate north of the Zahrani River, approximately 40 kilometers from the border, in preparation for anticipated airstrikes aimed at the militant group.
This evacuation directive is the most significant since a tenuous ceasefire came into effect on April 17, encompassing about 14% of Lebanon's territory. In a show of force, Israeli strikes have already targeted the southern city of Tyre, igniting fears among residents of further violence and upheaval.
“We will act with extreme force against Hezbollah, who we accuse of multiple ceasefire violations,” the IDF warned, highlighting the deteriorating security situation. In retaliation, Hezbollah claims its fighters engaged Israeli troops amidst escalating hostilities as the group alleged breaches of the ceasefire by Israel.

The recent order for evacuations encompasses approximately 300 towns and villages, including significant urban areas. Many displaced residents find themselves with no clear options for refuge, as humanitarian agencies express concerns over the overwhelmed capacity of neighboring Sidon to accommodate fleeing families. Authorities are urging civilians to seek shelter in the Beqaa Valley or Mount Lebanon, further inland.
This week’s military escalation has seen a barrage of Israeli air strikes across the region, resulting in the deaths of at least 31 people, including 15 in Burj al-Shamali, near Tyre, as reported by Lebanon's health ministry. Hezbollah’s response has included confrontations with Israeli forces, contributing to a climate of instability that threatens to spark further conflict.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed the intent to expand military operations, indicating that troops are deepening their presence within Lebanon beyond an initial buffer zone. “We are fortifying our security measures to protect northern Israeli communities,” Netanyahu stated during a recent cabinet meeting.
The escalating violence complicates ongoing negotiations to resolve the broader conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, as Iranian officials demand that any agreements also encompass Lebanon. The conflict, which reignited on March 2 following a Hezbollah rocket attack in response to an Israeli strike, has already resulted in a staggering humanitarian toll, with over 3,200 lives lost in Lebanon since hostilities resumed.
As the conflict unfolds, both sides accuse each other of violating the terms of the ceasefire, instilling fear of renewed mass displacement and ongoing violence among civilians. The landscape of Southern Lebanon is poised for further turmoil as both military operations and public evacuations continue to evolve.
